every runner has a story

Meet Bob English

The Lakeland Runners Club is proud to highlight the extraordinary contributions of Bob English—longtime supporter, past president, and visionary whose leadership has shaped the path of our club and running in our community.

Bob joined LRC in 1986 and served as president in 1988 and 1996, during a pivotal time when the club transitioned from its early affiliation with the YMCA into a more formal, independent organization. Under Bob’s leadership, the club began to pursue sponsorships and structure that mirrored successful clubs in Tampa and beyond. That foundational shift helped lay the groundwork for the vibrant, inclusive community we know today.

As the owner of Valiant Products, Bob has been a steadfast sponsor of LRC races since the late ’80s, helping the club stay competitive during a time when high-stakes “money races” in Tampa and Orlando dominated the scene. His generosity extended beyond LRC to include community initiatives like the Fallen Heroes 5k and a major donation to the George Jenkins High School track project.

One of Bob’s most impactful contributions is approaching LRC about the creation of the Bonnet Springs Park 5k. As part of the early planning team for Bonnet Springs Park, Bob, along with Bill Tinsley from the Parks and Recreation Department, recognized that the park’s trails were ideal for a 5k course. This vision aligned perfectly with LRC’s mission and sparked a unique partnership that continues to grow.

Since 2023, the Bonnet Springs Park 5k has drawn increasing participation—from 600 runners in its first year to 1,000 in 2025. More importantly, it has raised over $58,000 for the park through a significant annual donation by Valiant Products, race proceeds and generous community donations.  Thanks in part to the Carol Jenkins Barnett Endowment Fund’s 2:1 match by the BSP Board of Directors, these donations equate to an over $175,500 impact to the park in three years.

Bob’s commitment doesn’t stop with financial support. His passion for running and community-building has helped LRC dream bigger. Today, our weekly Kids Run Club meets on the Family Lawn at Bonnet Springs Park—another outcome of this partnership initiated by Bob’s request to host a race at the park.

Reflecting on LRC’s journey, Bob shares pride in the club’s growth from a small group of competitive runners to a welcoming community that embraces runners and walkers of all paces. He acknowledges the power of running—for the body, the mind, and the spirit—and reminds us that volunteers, just like the runners, are essential to every event’s success.

Bob English has helped turn Lakeland into a city that runs together, grows together, and gives back together. We’re grateful for his legacy, his leadership, and his continued inspiration.

Meet Angi Griffin

In 2012, a friend told Angi Griffin that it was so nice outside that they needed to walk Lake Hollingsworth instead of being stuck inside working out. They started meeting at the lake a couple of times a week. Angi was really intimidated being there because there were people running and we were walking. Some were even talking and laughing while they ran. After a couple of weeks, her friend said we should try running a little. That was a hard no for Angi. She didn’t run and didn’t like it, and besides, it might ruin her knees and she didn’t want to die (which she was sure would happen if she ran)! After a couple of more weeks went by, she started noticing there were some people much older than herself running. She decided she could try it and here we are today.
