LRC Training Programs
Lakeland is a great running community and we help each other get better and faster — and have fun doing it. Our training programs and group runs are led by RRCA certified coaches and experienced runners.
You don’t have to be a member of the Runners Club to run with these groups, but we encourage you to join.
All of the programs require registration, and weekly check-ins when you attend. Thank you for helping us follow nonprofit best practices.

LRC Workouts are led by certified coaches and provide the opportunity for runners to gain fitness, improve speed, and learn how to effectively complete interval workouts.
WHO ARE THE WORKOUTS CREATED FOR?
Intermediate runners. You are an intermediate runner if you have been running consistently for at least six months, and have been injury-free for the past three months. The workouts are designed for the full range of intermediate runners, and are meant to be high intensity for YOUR pace and safely push you out of YOUR comfort zone. Every runner who attends wants to be faster, even if their pace is different than yours.
Beginner runners. You are a beginner if you have been running less than two to three days a week consistently for 6-to-12 months. This is the minimum time required for connective tissue and muscles to adapt to the stress of running consistently. Beginners are warmly welcomed to do their own run and meet other runners from the community but are discouraged from joining the workout to avoid injury or burnout.
Advanced runners. You are an advanced runner if you are at or near your genetic potential. This is your opportunity to help guide and mentor beginner and intermediate runners so they too can work toward their full potential.
Workouts will last approximately 1 hour and will include a warmup, some drills, and a cooldown in addition to the workout.
Your total distance will be approximately 3—6 miles (pace and workout dependent) and coaches will help you with the right pace and number of intervals. You’ll warm up with a 10-minute easy run followed by form drills to loosen up and activate your body for a smooth transition into the workout phase. It’s also important to do an easy 10-15 minute cool down afterward to transition your body into a recovery phase.

Runs are better with a buddy! Join the LRC on Tuesday evenings for a community run starting at Swan Brewing (Lake Wire) location.
The group run will start at 6:00 PM with check in starting 15 minutes before. Check out our recommended route maps below.
This run is for all experience levels. We will circle up for announcements and take a group photo, then start together. The run coordinator will help match up runners based on pace, but there are no official pace leaders, and the group will naturally spread out. There are water fountains on the 5k and 5 mile route, you’ll need to carry water if you need it for the 3.5 mile route.
There will always be people doing shorter runs, some will continue on for more miles, and others will make up their own routes. It’s all good, we’re glad to have you, and hope you’ll join us under the tent for fellowship after your run.
Runners who sign up and check-in will receive a free tee after completing 10 runs.
Check-in at each run online. There will be a QR code on display to make it easy.

The LRC Kids Run Club is a running club for children to prepare them for a lifetime of running.
The program is held during the school year, is gender-neutral, and is designed for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, regardless of school affiliation. The emphasis of this program is on participation and developing a healthy lifestyle as opposed to being a competitive running program. The workouts include warmups, relays, distance runs, games, and stretching.
Youth sports provides opportunities to exercise, make friends, gain competence, build confidence, learn about teamwork, take risks, develop character and self-discipline. Kids need movement to grow healthy and strong. Regular physical activity strengthens muscles and bones, helps prevent health problems like diabetes and heart disease, and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression. Physical activity also clear benefits for life at school. Students who are physically active tend to have better grades, miss fewer school days, and have better focus in class.
Parents are required to stay at the practice location for the entirety of the workout and are encouraged to be physically active in eyesight of their child.
If you are not familiar with Bonnet Springs Park, you can find the location of the Family Lawn on their park map.
For students in 5th – 8th grade, we offer a Summer Development Program during the summer that transitions into a cross-country racing experience in late summer.

About the LRC Summer Development Program
The Lakeland Runners Club middle school development program is open to anyone in 5th through 8th grade regardless of school affiliation or ability level.
The program is ideal for athletes looking to prepare for cross country, cross-train for another sport, or begin running for the first time. Endurance makes every athlete better.
Our summer focus is not on competition but on demonstrating how running can be part of a lifelong healthy lifestyle. Our program is all about developing structure, self-confidence, and fitness. Through deliberate play, run-focused games, and adventures, we help kids get running without even knowing it.
We believe that fitness and fun can be mixed together. The friends they make in this program will give them friends for life. We believe in creating a warm and welcoming environment. Practices are 60 minutes long and often conducted in direct heat and sun, so please come prepared. Athletes will need a water bottle and a positive attitude!
In mid-July, registration for the LRC Lightning, our middle school cross-country team, will open. The team will run in 3 – 4 middle school meets at Lakeland’s Holloway Park against kids from all over Florida from August to October. The meets will be on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings.
Registration for summer development is free but requires an account. Parents/guardians will need to set up an account and then add their child(ren) to their account to register them.
Adults are encouraged to participate in the workouts or use the time to complete their own workouts at the location.
Our program can frequently be interrupted due to summer storms. Check the confirmation email for instructions to join our text group on Remind to be notified in case of cancellation.
About FLYRA (Florida Youth Running Association)
The Florida Youth Running Association held the first middle school state meet in 2010. In 2011, the meet was moved to the newly created cross country courses at Holloway Park, an elite series of running trails from 3k to 10k, that we in Lakeland are so fortunate to have access to year-round.
The LRC offered its first development program in 2015, encouraging enthusiasm for running by instilling a love of the sport in a fun and supportive community. The program runs mid-summer through October, and students without a school program or who want to compete at a higher level have to option to join the LRC Lightning cross country team
About the LRC Lightning Cross Country Team
Participation with the LRC Lightning XC Team requires separate registration.
Runners are encouraged to also run with their school program when one is available. The LRC Lightning is a cross country team open to all students in 5th to 8th grade. The program prepares runners to race middle school cross country 3k distance. Cross Country practice begins in August per the FSHAA guidelines.
The team participates in the Tuesday night middle school practice and has two additional practices each week, Thursday evening and Saturday morning. The location for these practices varies. The team runs 3 to 4 meets from August to October. These meets are held on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings.

Pace Chart
Want to start running, but aren't sure how?
The best way to build your base of fitness, in order to progress to running, is to use the run/walk method. Start with walking and continue the activity until you can walk for 15 to 30 minutes minutes consistently. Then start to switch between running and walking.
Safe Sport
Positive & Safe Sport Environment
The Lakeland Runners Club is committed to offering safe programs and activities. Our programs are designed for athletes to enjoy a welcoming and respectful environment where diversity is actively embraced. At any age, we strive for athletes to use the skills they’ve learned to contribute to the well-being of their communities.
Additional Resources for Parents
Our volunteer coaches are trained to protect young athletes from abuse through the Safe Sport Act training.
